Marine biotechnology has become increasingly important as a driving force affecting society, while addressing key societal challenges such as the sustainable supply of food and energy, climate change and environmental degradation, human health and aging populations. It holds potential for supporting economic recovery and growth in Europe by delivering new knowledge, products and services . At a Regional level is seen as an urgent investment area, with high economical potential, due to the natural assets of the Azores.

The Azores are characterized by a strong geothermal activity, which supports unique terrestrial and marine environments, suitable habitats to microorganisms and invertebrates, whose metabolic activity produces new biological compounds of interest for industrial enzymes, pharmaceutical, agro-food sector, bio-energy and bio-remediation, and scientific research products, with high added market value. There is an urgency to look at Marine Biotechnology has a local sustainable economic opportunity.

The workshop is organised by FRCT – Fundo Regional para a Ciência e Tecnologia using the World Cafe methodology.

It will involve citizens, scientists, business representatives, entrepreneurs, local authorities and policy makers in an open dialogue. Together, you will define a common vision and a roadmap of solutions and actions to face this challenge. The results, together with the outcomes of the other MARINA workshops in Europe, will be freely accessible on the MARINA Web Knowledge Sharing Platform, used for identifying lessons learned and best practices and disseminated at European policy conferences.
