Digitalization and automatization are not the only changes rattling the shipping industry. New technologic developments promise to make ships, ports and their construction and operation energy efficient, minimise pollution and thus lower the harm to the natural environment. This is what Green Port and Green Ship is all about. But are they green enough?
In any case, not all shipping companies and harbours can accept these developments with the same ease, either because of the inertia of the existing methods, the economic risks involved or inadequate tax- and incentive policy. And thus, none of the big Estonian cargo ships currently sail under the Estonian flag.
Estonian Maritime Administration is under pressure to devise a sea economy packet that adequately addresses these issues and encourages maritime companies to take the necessary risk. But as the sea is shared by many stakeholders and countries, there is a lot of discussion to be had on how we envision the future of green ports and ships, both locally and internationally.
