Sustainable sea mining and responsible research and innovation
Ricerca ed innovazione responsabile e sostenibilità dello sfruttamento delle risorse minerarie marine
We move toward an age of mining the deep ocean floor, the world’s most remote environment.
The seabed is thought to be rich in deposits of cobalt, copper, manganese, gold and rare elements essential for making smartphones, laptops, solar panels electric cars and other indispensable products of modern life but as the world’s population rises, demand, for these metals and minerals surges beyond what our land is able to provide.
At the same time, the ecology inside deep ocean still defies common knowledge so scientist and environmentalists rise concerns about venturing into this unknown territory. Therefore, sustainable exploitation of marine natural resources is essential for the development of green and blue economy and sustainable management of marine and coastal environment.
Which action should be taken to achieve a sustainable sea mining in harmony eith a greener and a bluer future?

GET STARTED! FOLLOW OUR WORKSHOP AND SHARE YOUR IDEAS ONLINE
The workshop is organised by Osservatorio del Mare a Molfetta using the Science café methodology.
It will involve citizens, scientists, business representatives, entrepreneurs, local authorities and policymakers in an open dialogue. Together, you will define a common vision and a roadmap of solutions and actions to face this challenge.
The results, together with the outcomes of the other MARINA workshops in Europe, will be freely accessible on the MARINA Web Knowledge Sharing Platform, used for identifying lessons learned and best practices and disseminated at European policy conferences.
