Sustainable aquaculture – what is at stake for the future?

L'aquaculture durable, quels enjeux pour demain?

  France is the second producer of aquaculture products in the EU. Shellfish farming – mainly oysters - is the main sector (1595 600 tons in 2015) followed by carnivorous fish. But the production has been decreasing for the last 15 years (less than 50.000 tons of fish in France against 1 million tons in Norway). The diversity of French coasts should allow a development of sustainable aquaculture. The activity is facing many challenges to stay competitive, offer new economic resources and jobs while improving environmental impact and increasing resilience to environmental disruption (climate change, ocean acidification, pollution, increasing pressure linked to other marine activities such as transport, tourism, industry along the coasts…).

What are the measures to take and the knowledge gaps to fill in order to improve aquaculture’s sustainability, productivity and social benefits? You want to use your creative mind to develop solutions that best serve individual citizens, your local community and the European society at large. You want to make sure that your needs and expectations are taken into account when local, national and European decisions and innovations are being developed.

The workshop is organised by Nausicaa, National Sea Experience Centre. It will involve citizens, scientists, business representatives, entrepreneurs, local authorities and policy makers in an open dialogue. Together, you will define a common vision and a roadmap of solutions and actions to face this challenge.   The results, together with the outcomes of the other MARINA workshops in Europe, will be freely accessible on the MARINA Web Knowledge Sharing Platform, used for identifying lessons learned and best practices and disseminated at European policy conferences.
