“How may we develop the Marine Biotechnology as a source of local and sustainable economy in Cyprus?”

Almost on all Cypriot beaches after a storm, we see piles and piles of “fikia”/“fitsia” the generic Greek/ Cypriot word for seaweeds. The most common type that we have in Cyprus that gives the impression of green fields under water is Posidonia Oceanica. On the beaches is visible when it makes thick grey layers, made out of its dead leaves. Are you aware that Posidonia Oceanica has antidiabetic, antioxidant and vasoprotective uses? Imagine, using the ‘fikia” to create diabetes medicine for approximately 425 million people suffering from it! The field that can help this process is Marine Biotechnology. This workshop is about bringing together people like you, to generate ideas, discuss, choose and decide actions for helping to formulate a national Marine Biotechnology strategy in Cyprus through the Responsible Research and Innovation principles. You want to make sure that your needs and expectations are taken into account when local, national and European decisions and innovations are being developed? The workshop is organised according to the Structured Democratic Dialogue method by the MARINA partners XPRO Consulting Limited and the Cyprus Neuroscience and Technology Institute. It will involve citizens, scientists, business representatives, entrepreneurs, local authorities and policymakers in an open dialogue. Together, you will define a common vision and a roadmap of solutions and actions to face this challenge. The results, together with the outcomes of the other MARINA workshops in Europe, will be freely accessible on the MARINA Web Knowledge Sharing Platform, used for identifying lessons learned and best practices and disseminated at European policy conferences.
