The potential impact of deep sea mining on the maritime economy, marine science and employment are considerable but with that also comes a series of issues:
• How to ensure smart growth and an economy based on knowledge, research and innovation?
• What is needed to put sustainable industries at the top of their competitive markets?
• Are the foreseen policies aiming at inclusive growth in which job creation and poverty reduction are key goals?
• How do the investments and risks associated with deep-sea mining look in comparison with the development of green alternatives such as the reduction of consumption and recycling of materials?
With deep sea mining ready to start in many parts of the world, this is a great opportunity for mankind to do things right.

What Responsible Research and Innovation actions are needed to make exploiting the deep sea in the North Atlantic sustainable?

The workshop is organised by Eurocean using the World Café methodology.

You want to use your creative mind to develop solutions that best serve individual citizens, your local community and the European society at large. You want to make sure that your needs and expectations are taken into account when local, national and European decisions and innovations are being developed.

It will involve citizens, scientists, business representatives, entrepreneurs, local authorities and policymakers in an open dialogue. Together, you will define a common vision and a roadmap of solutions and actions to face this challenge.

The results, together with the outcomes of the other MARINA workshops in Europe, will be freely accessible on the MARINA Web Knowledge Sharing Platform, used for identifying lessons learned and best practices and disseminated at European policy conferences.
