Energy from the Sea: our future or a road to nowhere?

The significance of offshore wind energy as an important source of global energy supply is reflected in actions, which different global bodies, such as the United Nations or the European Union take to support and further develop this technology. Such sustainable development is important with respect to e.g. jobs, security, climate change, food production or increasing incomes, access to energy for all. In Poland, wind energy is perceived as one of the main drivers for the country to meet the EU 20% level of renewable energy in the energetic system by 2020. However, wind energy sector is facing a serious crisis, which results in close to 70% of wind installations showing losses. sopot

What responsible research and innovation actions needed to make marine renewable energy sustainable? The following additional issues will be discussed: Is there enough space for marine renewable energy development in the Baltic Sea? How can marine renewable energy be regulated to facilitate sustainable development of coastal areas, including the principles of the blue growth? Which groups of stakeholders can support the development of marine renewable energy? You want to use your creative mind to develop solutions that best serve individual citizens, your local community and the European society at large. You want to make sure that your needs and expectations are taken into account when local, national and European decisions and innovations are being developed. GET STARTED! FOLLOW OUR WORKSHOP AND SHARE YOUR IDEAS ONLINE The workshop is organised by the Institute of Oceanology of Polish Academy of Sciences using the focus group methodology. It will involve citizens, scientists, business representatives, entrepreneurs, local authorities and policymakers in an open dialogue. Together, you will define a common vision and a roadmap of solutions and actions to face this challenge. The results, together with the outcomes of the other MARINA workshops in Europe, will be freely accessible on the MARINA Web Knowledge Sharing Platform, used for identifying lessons learned and best practices and disseminated at European policy conferences.
